MEGISTI-KAŞ
We accompany the strokes of friendship of two ancient peoples who feed from the same waters.
MEGISTI
Meis (or Kızılhisar, Greek : Καστελλόριζο Kastellorizo, officially: Μεγίστη Megisti; is an island in the Dodecanese Province of Greece in the Eastern Mediterranean . Its surface area is 11.98 km². All 406 permanent inhabitants live in the village of Megisti (Meis during the Ottoman Empire ), which is also the largest settlement on the island.
The only settlement on the island, Kastellorizo (Megisti), is a corruption of the name Château-Roux (Red Castle), which was given to the island by the Knights of St. John because of the red rocks here. After the Knights of St. John, the island came under the rule of Egypt , Naples and in 1512, the Ottomans . The Ottomans held the island until 1915, except for short intervals. The island, which fell into French hands during World War I , was given to Italy with the Treaty of Lausanne (1923). After World War II (1948), it was connected to Greece together with the Twelve Islands .
Sponge diving is the most important occupation on the island, where a small amount of grapes and olives are grown. The coasts of the island are extremely indented and steep, and can only be entered from the east coast. The only settlement on this coast is the village of Kastellorizo (Megisti).
There is a ferry and air connection to Rhodes . Apart from this, it is possible to go to Meis city with ferries departing from Kaş district of Antalya province every day. There is an airport on the island. There are only bus services between the airport and Megisti on the island.
